Thanks to the “date letter” any piece of British sterling silver can be exactly dated. Old Sheffield Plate and Electroplated silver are not subject to this practice and the regulation issued by the authorities had the main objective of preventing possible frauds by unscrupulous sellers of plated ware. The best-known initiative is the prohibition effective from c. Elkington was forced to change its mark in of stamping plated wares with the “crown”, to avoid misunderstanding with the symbol identifying the Sheffield Assay Office. The absence of an official dating system makes it difficult to date silver plated wares. An approximate date can be determined by examining: Elkington deleted the “crown” from its mark in In this case, being known the date letters of Elkington, we can date exactly the two marks. That in the left with the crown is

There are lots of ways to guesstimate ages, and geologists knew the earth was old a long time ago and I might add that they were mostly Christian creationist geologists. But they didn’t know how old. Radiometric dating actually allows the measurement of absolute ages, and so it is deadly to the argument that the earth cannot be more than 10, years old. Radiometric methods measure the time elapsed since the particular radiometric clock was reset.
The UK’s first food waste supermarket has opened in Pudsey, near Leeds. Food waste campaigners from the Real Junk Food Project have opened “the warehouse”, a store on the Grangefield Industrial.
A high-backed settle — sometimes with storage space beneath the seat or a cupboard in the back — was a familiar sight on either side of the hearth in farmhouse kitchens and inns from the 16th to 19th centuries. A settle table is a wooden settle with a hinged back that folds over to rest on the arms and form a table. Soft-paste porcelain was manufactured exclusively from c until the discovery of local china clay deposits enabled true porcelain to be produced from Louis XV granted the factory a monopoly to produce porcelain in the meissen style, c , and even after this was relaxed, no other French company was allowed to produce porcelain with coloured ground or gilding.
It was not in common use until the mid- 19thC and was made until modern times when periscopic types were used on aircraft. In 16thC sgraffito ware from the Bologna area of Italy, for example, designs were incised in the white slip coating to reveal a red clay ground. The technique has been much used throughout Europe since medieval times, particularly on country pottery from south-west Britain.
It was a feature of Barnstaple pottery throughout the 18th and 19th centuries — and was often inscribed to commemorate special events such as harvests and christenings. Royal Doulton artist Hannah Barlow has become one of the most collectable sgraffito artists. Her studies of typical countryside scenes featuring horses, sheep and cattle on Doulton stoneware are very sought after and can command high prices at local and national auction houses. If you are from the South, it is likely that you are familiar with persimmons. Persimmons are a fascinating fruit that grows wild throughout much of the South. When completely ripe, the pulp is sweet and delicious, but when not ripe, it will turn your mouth inside out!!!
Isochron Dating By Chris Stassen The article is well illustrated and well written. There is an introduction to the generic problem of radiometric dating, but this article concentrates on one well established method called the “isochron method”.
The earliest known evidence of human occupation in the Sheffield area was found at Creswell Crags to the east of the city. Artefacts and rock art found in caves at this site have been dated by archaeologists to the late Upper Palaeolithic period, at least 12, years ago. This has been ascribed to the Maglemosian culture. A cup and ring-marked stone was discovered in Ecclesall Woods in , and has been dated to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age periods.
It, and an area around it of 2 m diameter, is a scheduled ancient monument. It is this tribe who in around BC are thought to have constructed the hill fort that stands on the summit of a steep hill above the River Don at Wincobank , in what is now northeastern Sheffield.

These beautiful and very fine quality Old Sheffield Plate candlesticks have a wonderful classic Georgian design with lovely wide gadrooned bases leading up to further gadrooning underneath the telescopic necks and removable nozzles. The bases have green felt to protect furniture. The candlesticks appear to be unmarked with the quality and style of Matthew Boulton. The candlesticks are in general very good condition with overall wear consistent with age. They both sit perfectly and the screw-telescopic systems are working perfectly.

Travel and Tourism About Sheffield One of the north’s key cities, Sheffield is a major metropolitan city and is home to over half a million people. Yet tight restrictions on development have ensured that the beauty of the adjoining Peak District National Park has not been compromised. As a result the urban area of Sheffield has excellent shopping facilities and a fantastic range of bars and restaurants, while the Peak District National Park on its doorstep offers breathtaking views of the spectacular countryside nearby.
The city also has a plethora of parks and woodland areas within its bounds, and set as it is in the rolling Yorkshire hills just east of the Pennines, Sheffield boasts some of the best views in the country.

It is just a small record of my experiences, hunting, researching and playing with silver and silver plate. One of the most frustrating parts of silver collecting it the lack of research data compiled in one place. I hope to correct this. I hope that parts of it can be useful to you. If you do find it useful please feel free to leave a comment.
If you use any information here please leave a link to the post for others. Tuesday, April 27, Clearing up the Rogers Confusion: Marks and Manufacturers There are a number of makers of silver both sterling and silverplate that use the Rogers name. This post is an attempt to create a list, history, and database that will make this situation a little less confusing. I do not imagine that I will be able to get everything down in one go. This means that this post will probably be edited several times.

The saw plate is cast steel, taper ground and has a straight tooth line. There are no missing teeth and no kinks. The plate tapers from 0. The teeth have a gullet depth of 0. For a great downloadable explanation of saw tooth design, click here. I believe this saw pre-dates saw plate etching. The toe of the plate features a tiny delicate nib and it beggars belief how such a small piece of metal has stayed attached to the plate for so many years.
The saw handle is truly a hand-crafted work of art that just invites you to pick the saw up. The hang of the handle is such that the saw feels wonderfully balanced in the hand.

It was a spotter’s paradise, and I wish I could have gone there more often, but as the journey involved catching a train from Leeds and changing stations at Manchester, my mother had a morbid fear that her small boy could get lost somewhere along the way. It never dawned on me that she had another, more tangible reason, like ‘Mother Love’, for example, but since she offered no other explanation, her refusal seemed very unfair.
Didn’t she realise how important this was to me? But the answer was an emphatic ‘No, no, no! A few weeks later I met the doyen of young train spotters called Bonzo. Aged thirteen, he was a veritable professor on railways, who taught me all I needed to know about the Stanier ‘Black 5’ two-cylinder s with Belpaire fireboxes, tapered boilers and outside Walschaerts valve gear; the 3-cylinder express variant ‘Jubilee’ class and rebuilt ‘Royal Scots’, and the 4-cylinder ‘Princess Royal’ and ‘Coronation’ class Pacifics.
The ‘Coronations’ included the ex-streamlined locos which had been stripped of their casing in , yet instantly identifiable by their bevelled smokebox tops. The LMS hierarchy was keen to have a crack at the record and upon completion of they invited the press for a special run from London Euston to Crewe on June 29th In order to get the best performance out of the loco a section of the WCML’s maximum speed limit was raised for the attempt, but it wasn’t until the special train got perilously close to Crewe that the LNER record was eventually beaten – the LMS claimed a peak of mph recorded on the chart of the loco’s speed-recorder.
Click on photo to see the full ‘Coronation Scot’ train. It emerged from the works with a double chimney, streamlined casing and painted in red and gold livery. A year after the streamlined casing was removed the loco became upon nationalisation in. A long time allocation to Camden 1B the loco moved to Willesden 1A for a short time and finally Crewe North 5A from where she was withdrawn in September
