Perestroika Dear Friends, Well. So much has happened, so much has changed, and I have so much to tell you. Not all at once, of course, but over the next weeks and months, as the book progresses, and the blog continues, and life evolves, and the tides of life ebb and flow. My dog Nellie and I are currently on vacation in Port Townsend, Washington, a tiny town of ten thousand people at the tip of Washington State, surrounded by the sea. In June, over five hundred homes burned down in the Black Forest Fire. Shortly after the fire, I got a call to come down to Colorado Springs to help counsel people who had lost homes. It is taking, I find, rather longer than I had expected. I walk the beach each day, and in this small town other beach walkers say hello, and come up to pet Nellie, and chat. As we walked, we talked about the challenges of writing a memoir.

Some 32 per cent of trees were at high risk under business-as-usual in the City of Melbourne. They included rose apples and several species of elms, oaks and eucalypts. Melbourne’s inner north City of Moreland would see 26 per cent of trees at high risk under a business-as-usual scenario, such as purple-leafed plums, prairie crabapples and the narrow-leaved ash. Darwin had the highest proportion of trees — 85 per cent – most at high risk if emission levels rose to , while Ballarat had just 1 per cent at high risk.

Risks to trees were posed by both rising global temperatures and the urban “heat island” effect, where localised warming occurs due to dark-coloured and paved surfaces, buildings and the emission of heat from human activities. The study was conducted by the Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub, a consortium of four universities funded by the Department of Environment and Energy. It said “changes to the composition and the traits of the urban forest will lead to changes in the sense of place and identity of cities.

Conversely, local native trees helped create unique city identities and connections to natural heritage and traditional Indigenous ownership.

According to the incident report from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the woman went on a date with the man after meeting him on “Plenty of Fish,” an online dating website.

They emerge in multiple lineages and have adopted multiple strategies to become what they are. A classic example of the Methuselah-ness of trees is the current record-holder, a 5, year-old great bristlecone pine that grows high in the White Mountains of California. That tree was almost years old when the first pyramids were built in Egypt. Scientists speculate that the hardy bristlecones owe their endurance largely to location: The giant sequoias, a short way down the mountains from the bristlecones, take an entirely different longevity tack.

These beasts — their trunks can be more than 30 feet across — live thousands of years, fighting fire and pestilence with thick, resistant bark and plentiful in-house repellent compounds.

History of Christmas Christmas as we celebrate it today has its origins in Victorian Britain. It’s hard to imagine now, but at the beginning of the 19th century Christmas was hardly celebrated. Many businesses did not even consider it a holiday. However by the end of the century it had become the biggest annual celebration and took on the form that we recognise today. The transformation happened quickly, and came from all sectors of society. Victoria and Albert gathered around the Christmas tree with their children.

Vast stands of dead timber in the Western U.S. have forced firefighters to shift tactics, trying to stay out of the shadow of lifeless, unstable trees that could come crashing down with deadly force.

Pocket What is home? This is a deceptively simple question. Is it the place where you were born? Is it where you happen to live right now? Does it have to be a dwelling, or can it be a spot on the landscape, or even a state of mind? For archaeologists tracing human origins, these are challenging questions. Yet answering them provides key insights into our evolution from hominids at the mercy of our surroundings to humans in control of them.

Having a sense of home, as we understand it today, is a product of symbolic thinking, a capacity that makes us unique among animals, including our own ancestors. Australopithecus species, to which the famous 3-million-year-old Lucy belonged, often sheltered in trees, where they may have sought cover under dense clumps of leaves in the way in which great apes do today when it rains. Much later, about , years ago, hunter-gatherers, probably belonging to the species Homo heidelbergensis, constructed a camp on a beach at Terra Amata, now a suburb of the French city Nice.

One large hut was about 30 feet long, and consisted of an oval palisade of saplings stuck in the ground, reinforced with a ring of stones, and presumably brought together to form a roof. Just inside a break in the ring where the doorway was, a campfire had burned in a hearth.

They matched on Bumble, the dating app where people swipe through potential partners but only women are allowed to initiate a conversation, and started texting. Following an ugly breakup with cofounder Justin Mateen, Wolfe brought a sexual harassment suit against her former colleagues, accusing them of discrimination and stripping her of her cofounder title—claims Tinder called unfounded. A post shared by Fast Company fastcompany on Aug 28, at 5: She sunk into a deep depression and eventually fled Los Angeles for Austin, where she thought she might open a juice bar.

In August of , Andreev and Wolfe met in Greece to discuss partnering on a female-centric dating app. Three years after that first conversation, Bumble has amassed more than 20 million users, and it continues to add more than 50, new ones per day. Now Bumble is betting that its matchmaking technology can do more than foster romantic or personal connections. The original dating service will be rebranded as Bumble Honey.

But this approach also taps into a critical cultural zeitgeist as women push back against the subtle and overt harassment they face in business. As companies like Uber and Google struggle to overcome public reports of discrimination, a rising cohort of women, from venture capitalists to finance and tech entrepreneurs, are determined to refashion what is acceptable and what is possible in the workplace.

Wolfe, who enlisted student ambassadors to make Tinder a hit on college campuses around the country, did the same with Bumble. The concept of Bizz is a relatively easy sell for current users: Set up a discrete profile for networking, all while continuing under the principle that anyone can match, but women alone can initiate contact.

Their magnificent crowns give instant shade on the hottest of days to people scurrying on roadside pavements. Their fan-like seeds scatter to lie unobtrusively on the ground. Looking at the five Angsana, or Pterocarpus indicus, trees recently re-homed at the Esplanade Park from a field in Bidadari, where they were cultivated, it is hard to imagine the leafy giants that used to stand in their place which were ravaged by a fungal disease that left them for dead, their leaves yellow and branches brittle.

Those five earlier Angsana trees had sheltered a popular dating spot known as “gor zhang chiu kar” in Hokkien, or “under the five trees”, from the s to s before they were infected and subsequently removed. The disease killed by obstructing the water transport system of the trees, causing them to wilt and die. Between and , more than infected Angsana trees were chopped down all around Singapore to prevent its spread.

Now more than two decades later, those five disease-resistant Angsana trees, weighing an average of 8 tonnes and standing proudly at Esplanade Park, are a testament of the research – bred to be immune to the disease. It was the first time mature disease-resistant Angsana trees were transplanted there. At the peak of its spread between and , the disease would kill an average of 28 Angsana trees on the island in a month.
